Occasionally I go onto Conservapedia.com. I really don't have an excuse for this, except that its so horrifying that it's addicting. At least it doesn’t pretend not to be biased. *cough* Fox "News" *cough* . But they linked it, so I read it. And I honestly wanted to cry.
The fact that a college student was murdered was awful. But to suggest that because he was murdered by a person who was gay, this should be a bigger story, is ludicrous. If a white college student was murdered by, say, a black college student, should that be a bigger story, too? And to identify the murdered as a "homosexual" is beyond offensive. No one should be identified first and foremost by their sexuality.
Also, Matthew Sheperd's death was hate crime. I don't know if Conservapedia knows what a hate crime is. I don't know if they know why hate crimes are terrible not just in terms of their direct casualties, but that they tell people "you deserve to die." And though Jason Shepard's death is a tragedy, it was not a hate crime. And that's why it's not a bigger new story.
I know that's depressing shit, but I needed it off my chest.
Love,
Nicola
